Getting Started: Germinating Cactus Seeds

Photograph for growing reference; seedling results vary by species and conditions.
Before you sow
Check the instructions for your particular cactus species. Germination preferences vary, even within one genus. Use a clean container with drainage or a carefully managed enclosed propagation setup and a suitable fine, well-draining seed-starting medium.
Sowing
Moisten the medium evenly before sowing. Many small cactus seeds are surface-sown or only very lightly covered, but follow species-specific guidance. Label the container with the species, batch and sowing date.
Early conditions
Provide bright, indirect light and stable, appropriate warmth. Avoid intense direct sun through plastic covers, which can overheat seedlings. Keep the surface appropriately moist for germination while preventing standing water. Ventilate as needed to avoid excessive condensation and fungal growth.
What to expect
Germination timing and success depend on seed quality, species, temperature and care. Not every seed will germinate. Introduce drier conditions and stronger light gradually as seedlings mature.
