Troubleshooting Cactus Seed Germination

← All growing guides

Photograph for growing reference; seedling results vary by species and conditions.

Nothing is sprouting

First check the species-specific expected germination window. Also review seed freshness, temperature, moisture and sowing depth. Some species require specialized conditions; do not assume every cactus behaves alike.

Seedlings are stretching

They may need more light. Increase intensity gradually, checking for heat buildup and scorching.

Seedlings are collapsing

Excess moisture, poor airflow or disease may be factors. Isolate affected containers, remove decaying material safely and review watering, cleanliness and ventilation.

Keep records

Record seed batch, sow date, temperature, light and watering changes so you can compare results over time. Germination is variable and never guaranteed.
